Teachers are not allowed to support the parents and often face discipline if they do. It's not legal but it happens as there is not much accountability. Again, sadly, it's about the bottom line being financial. I have had 14 years of advocating for our 2E boys, both of whom had IEP's. It can get ugly out there and very stressful! Thanks for all the great resources and support for our 2E families! :-) Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12753928929585471243noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4052350205578257248.post-49018833284434535932016-10-27T13:43:33.583-04:002016-10-27T13:43:33.583-04:00Very nice article. Highlighting areas, of course, and letting my gifted 10 year old read it so he knows we are not excluding him from anything.

This is so right on - people don't want to hear about his reading level, and can't believe he struggles with some parts of math. They can't relate to hours long discussions of obscure topics or the ongoing horror of an unclear health class on contagious diseases (thanks for NOT telling the kids they can't catch ebola and other bad things in our rural area or small town school).

The worst thing is the disappointing non-discussion after a long psychological assessment that ended with a, "wow if you really tried you could have been all the way over here on the bell curve with everything instead of many.". REALLY? He skewed it, not on purpose of course, trying to be at what he thought was her level and where she wanted him to be. Sigh.

Thanks for the encouragement.Mystic_Momhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00099062213372011260noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4052350205578257248.post-14325229623076076702016-05-16T15:22:46.901-04:002016-05-16T15:22:46.901-04:00Great article. Trouble is even when you find schools / teachers that are receptive - they rarely have the resources to meet your child's needs. It is simply a tragedy when ANY child does not have the opportunity to experience the joy of learning and achievement.Sandra Clendonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13376550606083972740noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4052350205578257248.post-36159649344037793922016-05-15T20:05:54.934-04:002016-05-15T20:05:54.934-04:00Some people (including family members) think all w...Some people (including family members) think all we do (and did when our daughter was younger) was 'force' her to learn things. My child (actually, children - because my son is bright as well, but does much better socially and emotionally) deserve to have enrichment both at home and at school. People have said that we shouldn't give enrichment because they'll be bored in school. Enrichment can be carried out outside the realm of traditional academics. We provide them with many opportunities to engage with their peers socially via numerous activities (not just organized, but letting them roam the neighbourhood and call on friends - GASP!) and give them other enriching experiences when we're together as a family. Someone has told me (on more than one occasion) in regards to my daughter's challenges that, "Being smart isn't everything." Well, no duh! I would love my kid to be great socially and emotionally - and gifted. However, read the profile of gifted kids - asynchronous development is very common. In other words, gifted kids are often way ahead in some areas but behind in others, quite often socially and emotionally. We did not neglect these areas of her development - she was not raised in a closet! This is who she is, and it's our job not only to nurture our kids' strengths, but to help them in the areas where they are lagging. While our school system is known as being one of the best in Ohio, no one seems to understand gifted children. When my older son was in Kindergarten, the district coordinator for the gifted program was a wonderful woman who was gifted herself and she was a great help to us. However, she left the district the next year and while her successors have claimed to understand gifted children, they honestly have no idea. The teacher in charge of the gifted program at the elementary level also does not understand gifted children. There are two other parents that I know who really understand gifted children (being gifted themselves) and we all agree that she is not effective. Interestingly, the parents who do not understand gifted children think she is great!

I too have spent many, many hours advocating for my sons. Although my younger son has a virtually identical IQ as my older son, the younger one struggles in school while the older breezes through everything. My older son is advanced three-four grade levels in math and is completely done with his high school math in eighth grade. Even though my younger son gets good grades, it was obvious to me that something was just not clicking. Of course, his teachers all thought he was just an average student. Finally, after five years of a lot of research on my part and visits to two very well-known gifted psychologists (who did not help a bit), I realized that he might have "stealth dyslexia." So I had him tested, and indeed he was dyslexic. Unfortunately, even though his ability indicates that he should be reading at well above grade level, he reads just at grade level, but that is not enough to qualify him for an IEP. We were somewhat fortunate that he did qualify for an IEP for writing, and that has given him some help, but still not what he needs.

There are many days that I also am ready to give up and just let what is going to happen happen. However, I remember my own unchallenged childhood, the mistakes that I made growing up and the outcome, and I realize that I do not want my children to become like me.

I follow most of the blogs and have memberships in most of the organizations, but unfortunately there are no easy answers, just a sense that there are others out there with the same problems that I have.Robinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15553298356757938788noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4052350205578257248.post-43863859560349981252016-02-09T12:35:29.813-05:002016-02-09T12:35:29.813-05:00We have adopted our granddaughter. In first grade now and she place ((% on the STAR reading test for the nation reads at a 3.4-5.3 level I have had trouble with her teacher SHe was so bored with the reading in class. Ginally got her to get print outs for her to read at an appropriate level, but she makes her sit in the hall. The other students get to read to the teacher and in groups but she said she doesn't have time to let her read to her. So of the stuff she reads she doesn't understand she can read words but doesn't know what they mean. I have tries and tried I asked her to send it home so I could read with her. She did for about 2 wks then said it wasn't fair to the other kids. I feel like she is being exclude and punished for being advanced. I am meeting with the assistant principal today , by advice of her last yr aid. I alos asked at the beginning of the year about gifted testing I was told it was a lot of paper work and wouldn't be till after holidays. She never submitted her so I requested a parent referral. This is all new for me, it is difficult and hard on her too. A lot of kids are jealous. I try to tell her not to say anything about how good she reads, just for her sake. But she is proud of herself and so am I. Any suggestions? I thought about home school, but she is a such a social creature I had to do that. Plus I don't feel I am qualified to teach Her
CherylAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03254683156544705806noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4052350205578257248.post-66911680777907579472016-01-13T01:16:46.923-05:002016-01-13T01:16:46.923-05:00May I copy and share this at my next BOE meeting. ...May I copy and share this at my next BOE meeting.
